Visualizing Europe by Train With Animated Route Maps

An Interrail summer can cross six countries in three weeks. No photo dump tells that story well. An animated route map tells it in thirty seconds, one border at a time.

Chain the cities in Train mode

  1. Open the Route dock and add your itinerary as stops. Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, and Vienna is a classic run.
  2. Set every leg to Train mode in Route Builder and give overnight legs a longer duration so the pacing mirrors the trip.
  3. Reorder stops freely as your plan changes; the animation rebuilds around the new order.

Make the borders part of the show

The best part of European rail is how casually you change countries, so highlight each one as the train crosses in: a soft fill fades up on France, then Belgium, then the Netherlands. It's the same technique that carries the tour operator's guide to itinerary map videos, and a slower, two-city version powers the wedding videographer's guide to journey maps for honeymoon recaps.

More rails to animate

Once the loop works, the format scales in both directions, faster or much farther. Try Japan's Shinkansen network in motion for speed, or the Trans-Siberian Railway as a map animation for sheer distance.

Those one-click country highlights live in Region Selector. Open the Regions tab and light up your route, one country at a time.
