Mapping Bird Migration Routes as Animated Videos

The arctic tern flies from the Arctic to Antarctica and back every year. That's roughly 70,000 kilometers, the longest migration on Earth, and no chart conveys it like watching the route unfold across a spinning map.

Build a path that wanders

Real migration isn't a straight line, so don't draw one. In the bottom dock, open Route Builder and add stops at the real staging grounds (Iceland, the West African coast, the Benguela upwelling) so the path bends the way the birds actually travel.

1. Add each staging site as a stop in Fly mode.
2. Stretch per-leg durations for long ocean crossings and shorten them for coastal hops.
3. In the Motion tab, apply Gentle Glide from Motion Curves so every leg drifts instead of snapping.

One story among many

The same build works for any species. Swap the tern's ocean legs for land corridors and you have the great wildebeest migration as an animation.
