Visualizing Magellan's Voyage as a Map Animation

In 1519 five ships left Spain heading west. Three years later one came back, having circled the Earth. That arc of ambition and disaster fits a one-minute map animation almost perfectly.
Build the circumnavigation
- Add the key ports as stops: Seville, Rio de Janeiro, the Strait of Magellan, Guam, Cebu, and back around the Cape of Good Hope to Spain.
- Set every leg to Sail mode. It's the same setup covered in our guide to animate ocean and sailing routes on a map.
- Give the Pacific crossing the longest duration by far. Ninety-eight days of open water should feel long even at map speed.
Pace three years with easing
Constant speed flattens the drama of a voyage like this. Open the Motion tab and use Motion Curves to ease out of each port, then drag the bezier down on the storm legs. The crawl through the strait plays best at half the speed of the trade winds, and the slowdown reads instantly as struggle.
More voyages to rebuild
The same template carries other sea epics. Compare it with Zheng He's treasure fleet as a map animation a century earlier, or go north with the Viking voyages across the North Atlantic. Same tools, very different seas.
