How to Animate Ocean and Sailing Routes on a Map

Sea crossings deserve better than a straight line over blue pixels. In Mappi, Sail mode gives your voyage a curving open-water track, a ship icon, and a wake that draws on as it moves.

Set up a sailing route

  1. Open the bottom dock, choose Route, and add your ports as stops in Route Builder.
  2. Switch the travel mode to Sail. The path bends around coastlines instead of cutting across land.
  3. Style the line as a dashed wake and pick the ship icon, then set per-leg durations so long crossings read slower than short hops. The result looks like a voyage, not a diagram.

Make the water the star

An ocean-heavy frame lives or dies on its water color. Open the Theme panel and deepen the sea tones so the dashed wake stays legible at a distance. A pale route line on near-black water is the classic maritime look, though a cold silvery sea like the one in the Viking voyages across the North Atlantic works just as well.

Voyages worth recreating

History is full of ready-made sea stories. We've rebuilt Magellan's voyage as a map animation and traced Zheng He's treasure fleet across the Indian Ocean. Each one is a template you can copy for your own route.
